Q&A w/ Leila


1.) Tell us a little about "Expired Goods" etsy shop.
I sell jewelry created from vintage parts. That includes, old chain, disassembled jewelry, and interesting old stuff such as monocles, compasses or keys. The majority of items I sell are recreated and designed by me but I also feature a few interesting vintage pieces that didn't require any alterations (those are listed in the "vintage items" section). My shop is very new, it opened in October 2010, but I will also be adding altered clothing and home decorating items in the near future.

2.) What inspires you to create your jewelry?
I originally started making jewelry because my friend Mia encouraged me so she was my first inspiration. Now I draw inspiration from nearly anything. I've gotten ideas from fashion blogs, movies, DIY home design websites, and even avante garde pieces of furniture. I can see one interesting item and it can spawn a practically unrelated, yet rad idea. My memory is crap so I carry a little notepad around with me for ideas and sketches.

3.) What separates you from other etsy jewelry shops out there?
I offer many different types and styles of jewelry items on my site, some more traditional and some more edgy. As I was creating my first collection, I was worried it would appear discordant until I saw everything together and it was clear that I had a cohesive story to tell.

4.) What is your fave item in your shop?
I would (and do) wear every item that I sell so it's tough to say. I'll narrow it down to 2 items. I LOVE the "Que Hora Es Bangles" because they make an amazing statement piece. I also love the "Peek-a-boo Pin-Up Girl" lockets, they are made with vintage nude photos but are still very cute and tasteful.

5.) What type of girl do you envision wearing your pieces?
My pieces are interesting conversation starters without being overly flashy.
I see the girl who wears my jewelry as being stylish but also a little laid-back about it.

6.) What's your personal style like?
I love mixing old and new. Everyone who knows me knows about my obsession with Etsy and Ebay. I find amazing deals on interesting vintage items to pair with new clothes I buy from mall shops and boutiques. My style icon would be Gwen Stefani since she has a classic look but is always keeping things fresh.
