I introduce to you the Maya Tobias etsy shop! Maya is a Manhattan-based jewelry designer, who creates jewelry from vintage and contemporary metal findings, chains, and stones. Maya's jewelry can be dressed up or down, but either way her pieces are sure to be the star of any outfit ensemble.

Q&A w/ Maya Tobias

1.) Tell us a little about The Maya Tobias etsy shop.

My jewelry pieces are like a beautiful collage of all the findings, chains and stones that I’ve collected over years of traveling and exploring antique markets—in New York, Austin, Paris, Morocco—all over.

The search for unique and interesting pieces is one of the most important parts of my design process, and is as much fun for me as figuring out how to turn them into standout, wearable pieces of jewelry.

2.) What separates your jewelry shop from others out there on etsy?

Each piece of jewelry has a story behind it about where the parts come from, and because I use vintage findings that I collect from all over the world, everything is unique and either one or few of a kind—which means that I’m always creating new and interesting designs.

I constantly strive to make jewelry that is bold enough to be a statement piece, but also simple enough to match any outfit and never go out of style.

3.) What inspires you to create your pieces?

Some of my inspiration comes from the countries and places where I buy my different pieces and parts, but mostly it comes directly from the pieces themselves. I buy things that speak to me, and then figure out how to bring them to life by combining them with different chains, stones and metal findings.

My design style is constantly evolving as I find new pieces and learn new techniques. I love intricate patterns, geometric shapes, beautiful stones, and vibrant colors.

4.) What is your favorite piece of jewelry in your shop?

Santa Fe Slinger earrings, in turquoise. The vintage diamond-shaped beads are from my favorite bead store in Austin, the gray beads are from Indianapolis and the gold chain is from New York (where I live). They are very long, which makes them a great statement piece, and also a little fun and weird—which is why I love them.

5.) Your jewelry seems to have a bohemian feel, what is your own personal style like?

My personal style is definitely similar to my jewelry in that I mix a lot of vintage dresses and shirts with more basic items like skinny jeans and solid colored tank tops—but I think that my style is a little less feminine and floral than my jewelry, and more eclectic and varied.

I’ve never believed in matching and I love colorful clothing with interesting patterns, but when it comes to getting ready in the morning, I spend twice as long deciding what jewelry to wear as I do picking out my clothing, because the jewelry is always what makes or breaks an outfit.
