Q&A w/ Jules {show owner}


1.) Tell us a little about Wearable Art by Jude etsy shop.

I started Wearable Art by jude almost 18 months ago. I sell my photographs in a few galleries and about 2 years ago one of the gallery owners told me that two-dimensional art was not selling very well because of the economy. I had been thinking about putting my photos into wearable/usable art for a bit and was looking for someone to do it for me. I decided that might be a way to sell my photography - I liked the idea of someone wearing my art on them! I had always wanted to design jewelry so it just seemed to be a natural progression to just do it by myself. It has been very successful in galleries, local shops, online, and at art shows. Luckily, though, people began purchasing photographs again - it's what I love doing the most.

2.) I think that is so unique that you incorporate your own photography into your jewelry designs. If you had to pick, what is your most favorite thing to photograph?

That's a very hard question. Anyone who is familiar with my photography know that I'm obsessed with trees, queen anne's lace, abandoned houses, and pretty much anything that has a creepy edge to it. I also love doing portraits - but only if the subject is willing to do what I ask and not "have" to be pretty and perfect. In people, I also like dark and a bit sinister.

To me, it's ALL about the story the photo projects to the viewer. I feel it's a successful photo when people get a gut reaction to it, see a story of their own making, or feel a strong emotion.

3.) What is your favorite piece in your shop?

You ask very hard questions! I love almost anything I put my photograph "Only Angels Know" into.. there is something about that photo that just speaks to me. Right now, though, my absolutely favorite is "The Delicacy of Leaves".


4.) What type of girl or guy do you envision wearing your pieces?

I think I have so many styles the "type" could carry over a wide range. I have delicate, large, long, short, Victorian-looking and some modern. My older sister, Lynn, has purchased at least 15 necklaces from me and she's 58. I just ran into an ex co-worker who told me her 14-year-old daughter has purchased quite a few pieces from a local gallery.

I do think that people who love art and the unusual will be attracted to what I make.

5.) Tell us a little about your own personal style.

Truthfully, my jewelry of choice would definitely be earrings. I wear a lot of black and a certain color green (referred to as "baby poop green" by my husband). The Renaissance/Victorian/Steampunk look appeals to me, which matches perfectly with the fact that I love feminine flowing tops and dresses. The idea of living in another time or era sort of helps me when I choose pendants for photos and I hope that shows through in what I design.
