Winter is in full effect and as much as I love the colder temps (and the clothes that come with it!) there's nothing worse than catching the dreaded cold. It always seems to come around the same time each year for me, end of January to mid February, and it stops me in my tracks every time. Probably the worst part of catching a cold is the nasty cough that comes with it -- am I right? It keeps you up at night and leaves your throat feeling sore and scratchy -- no bueno! Since I know colds are inevitable for me, I have some go-to tips (some old, some new) that are sure to help me get back on my feet and to take back my day. TAKE THAT, COLD! ;)
I know it goes without saying, but rest is KEY to keeping your immune system strong. If you aren't getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep a night then you're just putting yourself at risk of getting run down and feeling sick. I make myself go to bed at an earlier time than usual in the winter months because I know how susceptible I am to colds.
One thing that is a must for me in the winter months, and is especially comforting, is a hot cup of tea. There's something so relaxing about cozying up on the couch or in bed with a good book and a nice, hot cup of tea. I especially love to put honey and lemon in mine. The lemon helps to break up congestion and the honey is great for soothing a sore throat.
Something that is new to my list and I just can't get enough of (I use it daily) is an essential oil diffuser. I've always been a fan of aromatherapy and I've found that there are certain essential oils that can instantly put me at ease. Essential oils are not only comforting, but they can help prevent you from catching viruses, such as colds. Some of my faves are Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Orange. These help deter the growth of viruses, so they're especially great to use during the winter months. They also help keep the air inside my house fresh and purified, and they instantly elevate my mood as well.
I can't make a list of must-haves during cold season without mentioning a good winter coat. A good winter coat should help withstand cold harsh temps, wind and snow or rain. It should have thick insulation so it keeps your body warm even when you aren't moving. This vintage faux fur coat has been my go-to for the past 7 years. It's nice and thick and has kept me warm even in the coldest temps WITH rain too!! I took this coat with me on my trip to Paris back in October of 2010 and it kept me so warm and toasty that I didn't even have to worry about wearing layers of clothes underneath.
Last, but certainly not least, is treating your cough with something effective that won't have you bed ridden until it runs it's course. Robitussin® is a trusted brand that I've used for years. It's not only important for me to treat my cough so that I can feel better faster, but also because the last thing I want is to get others around me sick. Coughing throughout the day is a sure way to spread my germs. There's nothing I dread more than going into the office with a cold -- it disrupts everyone around me. Plus it's hard for me to stay focused when I'm coughing up a storm. Robitussin® 12 Hour comes in orange and grape flavors and soothes my throat with fast, powerful cough relief that lasts from morning until night. I can take it day or night and it will provide me with cough relieve for up to 12 hours, without making me drowsy. I think it's safe to say that Robitussin® 12 Hour has a permanent residence in my medicine cabinet. ;)
